Playing Clicketty-Click with your dog

Originally used on dolphins, clicker training is now accepted around the world as a superb method of training all animals, including dogs. It is based on a reward based training known as positive reinforcement. Once your dog has associated the clicker with tasty treats, you can use the double click sound not only to speed train him to understand games, but also to promote his best behavior.

The clicker works through classical psychological-conditioning principle of association and effect. The unique sound of the clicker becomes embedded in the dog’s brain, especially when it has been associated with a special good treat. Eventually, the sound of the clicker alone becomes the treat and so the signal can be used to reward your dogs in the home and on walks. It should only take a few attempts and some tasty treats to condition your dog to associate with the sound the clicker with food or reward.

With the clicker in hand, but held behind you, instruct your dog to sit. The moment he responds, first sound the clicker then follow this up with a food treat. Walk away from your dog and as he follows, instruct him to sit by your side again and repeat the click immediately when he responds correctly. Ask your dog to do a task and as soon as he responds for the first time, click and treat him.

Next time, give him the same instruction and click as soon as he begins to respond, then click again as soon as he achieved the task.

During the first week, it is advisable to use the clicker in home or garden, where your dog arousal level are usually much lower then when he is our on an exciting walk. Once your dog fully recognizes the sound of the clicker as the reward, he will begin to respond to its uses without much encouragement. Initially, the reward should be food-based, but eventually the reward following the sound of the clicker could be a pat of a verbal congratulation such as good dog.

Be sure to continue the close association with good by clicking each time you offer your dog his daily meal.
